The birds knew before we did.
Black currant first. Dark, wild, bruised and beautiful. Pulled from the bramble at the forest's edge where the light stopped. Then blackberry, slow and deep, sweeter than it should be this far from the path. The end met with smoked oud, arriving the way smoke does. Not all at once, but slowly filling up space.
This is the scent of old trees and older stories. Of feathers on fog. Of the moment before the candle catches and the shadows find their places on the wall.
